Lyndsey’s top ten tips

During these unprecedented times please make sure that you continue with your routine dental care at home. We asked our therapist and hygienist Lyndsey for her top tips:

“Hello everyone! It is vital that you maintain good oral hygiene during the period of the coronavirus pandemic. Here’s my advice...

  1. Brush at least twice daily, with a fluoridated toothpaste.
  2. Brush last thing at night and at least on one other occasion. It is important to brush before you go to bed as your salivary flow is reduced and you won’t have the natural cleansing from your saliva that you would have during the day. This can increase the chance of tooth decay.
  3. Use fluoridated toothpaste with at least 1350ppm fluoride.
  4. Spit out after brushing and do not rinse, to maintain fluoride concentration.
  5. Brush for two minutes – try timing yourself on your phone or a timer if you have one. The average time people spend brushing their teeth is only 45 seconds!
  6. Make sure to use a mouthwash at a separate time to tooth brushing if you use a mouthwash. Mouthwash contains less fluoride then your toothpaste so we do not want you to wash the toothpaste away.
  7. Ensure you use floss and/or interdental brushes once per day.
  8. Don’t forget those back teeth – try to swing your jaw to the side and half close to get the floss and brushes in those hard to reach areas.
  9. The tongue harbours bacteria that can cause bad breathe, clean your tongue with a tongue scraper if you have one on your toothbrush.
  10. The frequency and amount of sugary food and drinks should be reduced.
