Catching up with the latest dental developments

Rob has been out and about during the last month, attending conferences in Manchester and Newcastle upon Tyne.

He started at the 1st International Digital Dental Academy Conference, which brought 12 international speakers to the Bridgewater Hall in central Manchester. Digital dentistry may be defined broadly as any dental technology or device that incorporates digital or computer-controlled components.

At Cottingham Dental Practice, Rob is already using new technology to aid him with:

  • CAD/CAM and intraoral imaging
  • Computer-aided implant dentistry – including design and fabrication of surgical guides
  • 3D printing
  • Digital radiography – intraoral and extraoral, including CBCT scans
  • Photography – extraoral and intraoral
  • Practice and patient record management.

He said, “The conference introduced an exciting array of tools and applications that can be used for the benefit of patients to predictably plan and create solutions. It is always helpful to meet colleagues and discuss how we can achieve better oral health for our patients – digital dentistry is proving to be an invaluable tool across the practice.”

His next stop was at the British Endodontic Society two-day meeting in Newcastle, which looked at Endodontic Failure – Avoidance, Management and Consequences. Again, this attracted a range of international speakers as well as several suppliers of materials and equipment designed for endodontics (root canal treatment). Rob was one of 250 delegates – yes, 250 dentists all talking about root fillings.

Rob is now preparing his own talk as he has been asked to address the Leeds group of the International Team for Implantology about his experiences of using new techniques in placing dental implants. He likes a challenge!
