Top tip: interdental cleaning

Twice daily toothbrushing with a fluoride toothpaste is the cornerstone to a healthy smile, but there is one simply addition that can truly transform how healthy your mouth is – and that is interdental cleaning.

While toothbrushing is the most effective way to keep your teeth clean, it only reaches 60% of the tooth’s surfaces. Using interdental brushes or teeth picks to clean in between the gaps in your teeth is one of the easiest and most important things you can do to change the health of your smile for the better.

Interdental brushes have become more popular than floss as they are more convenient and less fiddly to use. However, floss works best when the teeth are very close together and even the smallest interdental brush does not fit in the gap.

Interdental brushes and teeth picks come in many different sizes, and it can be difficult to know which one is most suitable for your mouth. An interdental brush should slide between the teeth under gentle pressure, while still touching the teeth on both sides. There should be a little bit of resistance as you use the brush. However, you should not have to force it through the gap; if you do, it’s too big.

Claire and Renata are here to give you the best advice about how to keep your teeth and mouth clean. Please ask them any questions about interdental cleaning when you have your next hygiene appointment.
